“If you drink 12 glasses of apple juice you will sh*t hard as hell.”
During a recent episode of Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast, Matt McCusker highlighted excess apple juice consumption as a cause of extreme diarrhea in a conversation with Shane Gillis.
On Episode 440, at about the 20-minute mark, a conversation between famous comedian Shane Gillis and famous-enough comedian Matt McCusker, briefly delved into a little-know diarrhea culprit.
McCusker informs fellow comedian and hometown Pennsylvania friend that 12 glasses of apple juice will equate to a “complete blowout” in the bathroom.
Amidst laughter among the Poopable staff, the question was ultimately proposed.
Does drinking apple juice cause or potentially lead to blowout-level diarrhea?
The question is plausible enough, and at Poopable, it does not take much for the staff to fall into an internet research wormhole, especially in regard to bowl-movement health.
For all you apple juice loving poopers out there, drinking apple juice in moderation…so not drinking 12 glasses-a-day as highlighted by McCuster, does not typically cause diarrhea.
However, some individuals may experience gastrointestinal discomfort or changes in bowel movements after consuming certain types of apple juice or consuming large quantities of the juice.
Real doctors, Jeffrey S. Hyams, MD and Alan M. Leichtner, MD authored a delightfully titled article, Apple Juice: An Unappreciated Causse of Chronic Diarrhea, which displayed a test case of five subjects ingesting 240mL (8.1 oz) of apple juice.
According to the test results, “…evidence of significant carbohydrate malabsorption by breath-hydrogen testing and resulted in diarrhea. Withdrawal of apple juice from the diets of these subjects was curative in all cases.”
Sure, the article was authored in 1985, but that also was the same year Rocky Balboa upset Ivan Drago in Rocky IV. So, it is safe to assume those doctors were onto something.
Presently, medical science annotates a few other factors about apple juice, that could lead to a potential bathroom blowout.
Sorbitol Content: Apples naturally contain a sugar alcohol called sorbitol, which can have a laxative effect in some people, particularly if consumed in excess. Many brands of apple juice have higher concentrations of sorbitol. This is especially true if they contain added sweeteners.
Fructose Intolerance: There are a lot of poopers out there that have difficulty digesting fructose. Fructose is a natural sugar found in apples and apple juice. This can lead to symptoms such as bloating, gas, and diarrhea.
Food Sensitivities or Allergies: In rare cases, an individual may have an allergic reaction or sensitivity to apples or apple juice, which can easily manifest as gastrointestinal symptoms such as explosive diarrhea.
So, in conclusion, it is safe to assume that apple juice, may or may not cause blowout level diarrhea. This is all completely subjective to an individual pooper’s gastric health as well as medical history.
However, Matt McCuster is ceretainly deserving of the Poopable nod and flush of approval for annotating a definitive “12-glass” cause of diarrhea. Preventing fellow poopers from a day of diarrhea is a noble cause, which should be shared and embodied by all.
He’s also a pretty funny listen on the porcelain throne.
Poopable wants all the poopers out there to know as well that diarrhea can also be caused by various other factors. Viral or bacterial infections, dietary changes, food intolerances, underlying medical conditions, or medication side effects can have you waddling to the throne.
If you are a pooper that is consistently experiencing diarrhea after consuming apple juice or any other food, it’s advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a proper evaluation.
